Has anyone done this? My son has an 83 F100 stepside shortbed. He's thinking of lower it, looks like it would be a good move to drop it a few inches. Anyone have any recommendations for kits to do this?
From what I can determine you need to change the front I-Beams to Drop I-beams.
The rear axle cna be lowered a couple of ways.
For a 2" to 4" drop, change the spring hangers.
For a 5" to 7" drop, install an axle flip kit. It moves the spring from top of the axle to under the axle.
Several companies offer drop kits.
AIM Industries, Belltech, and DJM to name a few.
I am in the process (waitting for new lower spring perches and some rubber dampers) of doing a 2/4 drop. Just to warn you, the dropped I-beams bottom out easly but they give you a 3" drop. Springs will give you 2 inches in the front (if your stock ones haven't settled already then you have to either tourch the drop springgs-try not to do this-or get the lower spring perch off a pre-79 2x4 1/2 ton-have not done it yet so not entirely sure of it.) While you are done there you should change the radius arm bushings and check the brakes. shackles and hangers will give you 4inches and an axle flip will give you 5in of drop. Thanks for the info. I'm sure you'll be hearing from us once we start the project. His truck has already drooped about 2" in the rear from age. Will look at the vendors mentioned in one of the replies...I've had trouble finding kits for a 1983...understandable, doubt the sell a lot of 'em.
You can get camber bolts from skyjacker or most any other place that sells I-beam lifts/Twin Traction beam lifts. Or you can just take it to an alignment shop and they can fix it. I haven't finished yet so i haven't had it aligned, but thats will hopefully be done by next Monday.(i am getting the tie rods done at the same time)
