Hi, I am new. I am looking at a '72 F-100 Long Bed from New Mexico, it's a base model truck but with a r/b 400 and C6 installed at a Ford dealer. This truck is amazingly straight, rust free and unmolested, you could eat off the underside and the lower half of the motor and trans is leak free. The bed is dent free and it has always had a cap on it. The seller drove it to PA from New Mexico a few weeks ago and is asking a a little bit high of a price for it, I am going to offer him $2800 - does that sound reasonable for this truck? I have looked at three other '67-72s and they were all full of body filler, seems to be the case around here.
I was planning on doing some minor body work and repaint and swapping in disc brakes and P/S, dash pad and seat cover - it should then literally be restored.
Sound like a fair deal? I am a old Ford guy but don't have much experience with trucks.
Thanks for any info.
EDIT:
I also forgot to mention that it has the original paint with no signs of any bodywork ever.
Is the value substantially less than a Camper Special?
I would say the price is reasonable.
Look at it this way: You can buy a good truck for more than a beater.
Or you can buy a beater and sink more money into it.
I'd say it sounds like you found a pretty good truck.
And Welcome to FTE! It's nice to have you!
Sounds cheap to me. I paid more for both my 67 and 69, and one had some rust issues. Of course, I may be more of a sucker than most, buying 2 old trucks on Ebay.
Still, if it's clean as you say, I think it's a deal at $2800.
I did already... I have looked at several and know where to look for problem spots, at least I think. I am going to call him and make an offer tomorrow.
What year trucks can I pick up disc brake spindle/setups and p/s setups? Thanx
Look for floorboard and cab mounting point rust. These are prone to rust there.
I assume it's a 2wd or you would have said differently. My '71 2wd has PS, so I know they offered it then. I am pretty sure 2wd PS will mount up from rigs up to '79. Can't help you on the front disc. question, although I think the Ranger models during those years had discs in the F100s
If you pick up a truck trader you can usually find several of these trucks and you will seldom find a decent one for much less than that, although the 400 would make it worth less to me. I know some guys like these engines but all the ones I have worked on over the years didn't impress me much. On the bright side you have a transmission that a 460 will bolt to.
Well, I put money down on it and am picking it up on Wensday. I still think it's a fair deal, I hope you guys and gals will have me as a new member! Thanx!
Whats up with the picking on the 400. Jeez. Anyways, you made a decent buy and 2800 is a little high but I would consider the C6 and 400 a bonus. I would say thats quite desireable.
mattsbox99 If you find another 427 let me know. I have always wanted and never had. And I have a super clean low milage 64 full sized Ford 2 door post just begging to have its 223 yanked in favor of some serious grunt. Gotta have a 4 speed too
