Ok first of i have a 1977 F250 highboy 4x4 divorced transfer case ,I have been reading pages and pages of info regarding the possible steering linkage and power steering box options. I think i am going to end up with the saginaw box as I can not seem to find the 78-79 box anywhere , thats used of course the truck is just my toy and the budget is low for this project. I have seen a post in regards to using the steering linkages from a 79 F350? That seems like it may work by looking at the parts on Rock auto? I am totally confused as to what to do with the linkages my truck is at stock height and will not be lifted , i do not have acess to anything in regards to making a custom drag link. Is it possibly that simple to purchase 79 F350 linkages and bolt them in? also from the parts pictures it looks like the 2wd parts may work better then the 4x4? Just need some clarifaction, I think i have read to many threads and my head is spinning with info
If you are going with a 78/79 box or a saginaw there is fab work involved either way. If you can weld and cut steel you are good to go. You can buy drag link kits from places like wfoconcepts.com.
Thank you for the reply, I am not afraid of a little fab work, have all the tools welder etc, really just looking for a easy solution to update the push pull steering, maybe local parts store linkages ?
I'm unsure about a auto store upgrade. But for the money you can do a crossover conversion as well. Auto store tie rods and drag links are a major rip off. Check out the last few pages of my thread below. I am doing a saginaw and crossover swap as we speak.
Awesome build thread just read through most of it have to go back and re read a little closer, I guess i was miss informed by google searches found a few threads talking about swapping in 79 F350 steering box and the steering linkages?
I was going to do the 78/9 f250 4x4 box conversion but didn't want to cut up the crossmember, weld or clutter up the engine compartment. The rev rotation bronco box mounts on the outside of the frame. I think the only fab work will be cutting off the turned up lip on the frame, trimming the inner fender well and making a stout block to go inside the frame for increased strength.
Got the idea from the conversion that Bajafishnut completed. He has been a big help. I spoke with Bryce at Redhead and they are doing the box for me. (Buy once cry once.)
I hope it works as well, and is as EZ as I think it will be to install.
Got lucky i think just bought a 78 F250 4x4 box from a fellow Fte member , complete with pitman arm. Been looking at the different ways people have installed the box plating the frame , cutting or not cutting the cross member , possible rad clearance issues. I did run across this page looks like a clean and simple install? Any thoughts on this install? here is the link to the page
