Help, we need the advise of an expert or someone who has gone before.
The 17-year old male (with little to no mechanical expereince) in our house thinks it will be easy to swap a 1988 4-cyl turbo-charged T-bird engine for his 1996 4-cyl Ranger engine. He says that by using the computer from the 88 on the 96 he will be able to rewire the complete harness.
The 42-year old male (who can fix, repair, and build anything) feels that this is just one big can of worms. He feels that the chances of ever getting the wiring completed so that the emissions functions properly is about 2%.
Is there anyone out there who has attempted this feat that can offer some sound advise?
if you live where they do emission testing i wouldn't do it.
also if it's a auto trans make sure that the trans doesn't have a whole bunch of sensors in it.
i would not go through that much trouble for another four cyl.
v6 or v8 now thats a different story.
As a matter of fact, in most places that have emissions tesing, what he's proposing is illegal, due to the fact that the enigine is older than the vehicle. But yes, it would be a pain in the butt. If he really wants more power, get some mild aftermarket mods or go out and get another truck. By the time he gets done paying everybody for fabricating everything that you'd need to put that motor in, you could probably have a decent older truck with the 4.0. And yes, wiring and figuring out how to make the thing have any sort of emissions equipment on it is next to impossible.
