Am I a redneck?

Does it make me a redneck to have a ford ranger as my vacation vehicle? This thing believe it or not gets me 33mpg on the highway so when I make long trips I use the ranger.

I don't think real rednecks make long trips, so you don't qualify.

Put some kind of lift on it with muddin' tires; either make sure it's covered in mud all the time or paint it camouflage; put one of those 'tramp-stamp' windshield decals on that says something like "RedneK"; get the mud flaps with the 'naked lady' motif; slap a bumper sticker on the tailgate that says something like "God, Guns, and Grits"; and finally, put a rifle rack in the cab window with at least 1 rifle strapped in at all times.

Then, maybe you'd be considered a redneck for driving a Ranger as a vacation vehicle...

It does not make you a redneck.

But posting this does identify you as being terrible at math

A ranger wouldn't average 33 mpg if you rolled one out of the back of a c5 at 30,000 feet

Hand calculated or on board lie-o-meter. Have you verified the speedometer-odo accuracy?

What size tires and what gears/engine trans combo.

33/25 is such an outlandish figure I can assure you that it's telling you there's an error somewhere and not that your ranger is especially awesome.

I have some background in such things, am a poster over on ecomodders and have owned a few such vehicles hence my skepticism

I think you might be thinking of the full sized rangers ford used to have. The tires are 215/70/14s with 5speed manual and 2.3L. I grew up in Arkansas, back there ford ranger usually ment ford f150 or 250. Im talking about the courier sized ranger is what I have.

You and I are talking about the little ford ranger that's EPA rated for 23mpg combined. The one with the same engine 4cyl as my mustang (pre ls1 swap) that using every hypermiling trick in the book only got 25

Many years ago, my dad used my ranger to go to work for a week.

"In town" driving, he got 25mpg.

I don't think 33 on the highway is impossible.

Could I do it? Not with my lead foot.

As for the original question, taking a truck on vacation does not make you a redneck.

At 25 city/33 highway i suspect every single one of us would buy one today.......i certainly would! Years back i owned a Dodge D-50 ( Mitsubishi) with a 2.3 L turbo diesel........It got low 30's on the freeway when i drove it carefully, it was 2wd, 5 spd manuel, regular cab. Those numbers are WAY too high, or your an automotive tuning genius who should open his own shop.....

And the landing would absolutely KILL the aerodynamics of the truck.......lots of rough, uneven lines would really interrupt the airflow over the body......To the OP, rednecks typically own trucks, refer to them as trucks, not vehicles, and take them on fishing, hunting, 4 wheeling trips, not vacations.......And by the time you toss in 3 50+ quart ice chests full of Bud Longnecks, a case of canned chili, 5 fishin' poles, 3 jerry cans full of gas, tents, sleeping bags, couple rifles, shotgun, few pistols, 1000+ rounds ammo, chainsaw for cuttin' firewood, Momma's old cast iron skillet for cookin'.......Load all three of ya into the cab, youve added a 1000+ lbs of weight to the truck.......Mileage will suffer.....

Yes Im sure gas mileage would go down if I actually put something in the bed. If I want to haul stuff though I use my f150. I also have a hard time referring to a ford ranger as a truck lol... ford f350 now that's a truck, but a ranger?

"Light Truck" perhaps...

They can be surprising, though... When I was closing down and clearing out the call center I worked in, I found I could haul just as much crap to the dump in the Ranger as I could in my old F150... I once saw a Ranger that was used as a yard truck in a salvage yard - beat all to hell and then some, but kept right on chugging along...
