How are they as motors? Reliable? Theres one been sitting in a 78 f250 near me for about 20 years. Now I know the work that needs to be done before firing, just any comments on the motor itself? Thanks.

This may turn into a big topic. I've had a couple. I have one currently in my 78 Bronco.
They were detuned from the factory to pass emissions. This is easily corrected with aftermarket timing sets and camshafts. After the change it will feel like a completely different engine.
They do suffer with low oil pressure with high mileage but there are ways to solve this problem also.
Reliable? You betcha they are. Even when they get higher mileage and the oil pressure starts to go to crap they just keep right on going.
Before I bought my 78 Bronco it had sat for over 12 years. Engine was seized. I filled each cylinder with PB Blaster. I got it to start turning working it back and forth. It now runs smooth as silk and uses no oil. I changed the oil fairly often for awhile to get it cleaned out.
I'm very satisfied with my 351m. The original engine went over 175,000 miles. They have pretty good low-end torque. I just need to change my rear seal one of these days. It leaks a bit of oil.
crappy fuel mileage lower power output but they are dirt tough and reliable you about can't kill them in stock form, they don't have enough power to hurt themselves, but all in all they do the job well and can work day in day out for many many years.... pretty low maintenance and simply done.... if the price is right get her and make her your own
