I am stumped!

I picked up this truck last tuesday and it ran good on the drive from dallas to abilene except for a tire blow out. Went out to start in wednesday and there was no power in the batteries so I replaced them both, a new alternator and starter solinoid. now it cranks over again but it wouldnt start.

so I replaced the glow plugs, filled the oil and made sure the batteries were charged again and fixed a pretty nasty fuel leak. I can not for the life of me figure out what to do next. my diesel knowledge is very limited but iv gotten as far as I have from reading stuff on this site

I would say to go to the main page of this forum and look at the upper right for the "Search this forum" button. Then search for "No Start" and read some of those threads. There are several things to check in no start situations, and there have been many no-start threads in this forum where you can find a lot of good info.

I'd get a cam sensor from ford or IH and try it. You should have a spare to carry anyway, they are a common problem. If that isn't it we can go from there.

The part about the crankshaft position sensor is true. Those things do go out suddenly though mine were always intermittent. It's very easy to change out though. They used to be $100 but I think a lot cheaper now. I got a whole handful from a dealer for $10 each! I've had several go out but my truck has 400k miles on it

Here's a list of other things:
#1 The glowplug solenoid may be bad. Just make sure you're getting 12 volts to the glowplug wires when the ignition is turned on. The glowplugs stay hot for a few minutes even after the engine starts. It sits right on top of the engine just to the front and right (passenger side) of the fuel filter. It should be obvious which wire to check. Works just like any other solenoid.

#2 Try plugging in your block heater. There should be a wire with plug kind of between the driver's side battery and the radiator. Without plugging in the heater and depending on how cold it is I sometimes have to start it using starting fluid. This is very dangerous unless you know exactly how to do it. Below 10 deg F this doesn't even work and it will only start by plugging in the heater.

#3 Fuel filter may be clogged. It can get suddenly clogged with ice crystals. It happened to me recently. It lost power slowly. Yours sounds like something else but this is still a possibility. You can also get water in the fuel. I'd pull the filter out and look down in the canister and make sure there isn't a lot of crap in there. It's too warm in your area to worry about jelling but that can be a real problem in colder areas.

#4 fuel pump/fuel pressure. I don't recall if there's a schraeder valve to check this or not.

#5 High pressure oil pump. This works at about 3000 psi and operates the injectors. It uses engine oil and the funny thing is that if your oil gets too low it will shut off this pump before you lose engine oil pressure and damage the engine.

#6 The ECU can go bad. This is really hard to diagnose but just know that you can get a used one without too much trouble. Mine is a '96 and I gave up trying to get diagnostic gear for it.

That's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps.
