Locking Rear End

Long time lurker. I have a 2003 F350 DRW, crew cab pickup, with Western Hauler conversion. I use it mostly to pull a small toy hauler, with plans to go larger now that I'm retired. Great truck.

Except when it snows. We get little snow here in Coastal Virginia, but this truck is a DOG in the snow. Wheel spin. I tried to cure that with building a frame in the back and putting a plastic drum in it, and filling it with water. Works a little.

Question is, will a rear locking differential help in lower speeds. I understand you can't use them over 20 mph or so, but at lower speeds, will I benefit? Thought it might also work when camping, if I get in soft dirt.

Thanks

Is your truck 4x4 and what tires are you running ? Would a locker help YES but do you really need it? You shouldn't. I would just do weight in the bed and a set of tires that can handle a little snow. We get our fair share of snow here and I have a 4x2 and I don't have any problems. But when we get 12" or more of snow I just wish I had 4X4 but I'm still moving.

I locker will help but I don't know if it will help as much as it costs. Like the guy above said tires make a world of difference.

Oh and lockers are not limited by speed at all even freeway speeds are fine. Lockers will just increase tire wear driving in town with a lot of turns on pavement.
