It is time for a new clutch in my 79 150 4x4. It's on 35s and geared down to 4.56. I would like to go with a stronger-than-OEM clutch this time around, in the $300-400 price range.
I took a peek and found some from RAM, Centerforce, and Hays, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with these clutches. Or, if you have one you particularly like for around that price, please let me know. Thanks.
what motor?.... my kind of cheap "Brute Power" clutch has served me great for the last 4 years and lord knows i have not been nice to it in any way shape or form.... Brute Power Clutches -
Really cant go wrong with any/all mentioned above as long as they are not sourced out from some third world country. Just dont ever cheap out and buy any of the parts house brands made in china, indonesia, etc. I promise you wont be happy with them in 2 years.

I put a BWD Brute Power in mine in 1993. Still going, but I cant light up the tires. Maybe because its the original 11" clutch from the 351. Not improtant anyways. Damn good clutch set though....
does anyone know if i could get just this disc and use it with a regular normal clutch kit? or are the pressure plates specific? im having the same problem, i hit third and smoke it, if i had this disc it may improve
Thanks for the recommendations on Brute Power. They are super cheap! And if they're quality clutches I'm happy to save money.
I have another question someone here is bound to know. My 351 flywheel has the 11" clutch with 12 5/8" bolt pattern. Since it's the larger circle, does this mean I can put a 12" clutch for a 400 in there? Do they have 12 5/8" circles?
This may not be a very good answer to your question, but the only difference between the 351M and the 400 is the crank and the pistons. I just ran out to the shop and measured mine from a 400 that I'm rebuilding for my '78 F350 dump. It has the same bolt pattern and a 12" disk.
I went with a centerforce dual friction because I figured I'd be spinning large tires and pulling a heavy weight and I needed all the grip I could get. Ran me about $300+ if I remember but it's amazing.
A little stiff too. There's really no feathering at all; its either engaged or not, no inbetween.
Here is some info on the clutch to consider, I believe it does matter if you have a 351M and a 11" cause, I had the same issue and a 12" would not work. They gave me the wrong part # (and a 12" clutch) because I was un-informed when I went in to the parts store.
""""The 400 uses a 12" clutch and the 351m uses a 11"
Hard to tell what was actually put in everyone of these trucks, but here are the part numbers.
D7TZ-6375-D .. 400 Flywheel-Use with 12" clutch.
D7TZ-6375-E .. 351M Flywheel-Use with 11" clutch.
I've actually also been looking for a 12" flywheel with no luck for a while."""""
Above info thanks to ND.
Just make sure you replace the clutch as a "set", meaning (clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and center bushing).
Even though the 351M and 400 flywheels are the same size (diameter/circumference), and use the same ring gear, the bolt patterns are different. The 400 flywheel's bolt bolt holes are more toward the outward edge of the flywheel, needing a 12" clutch.
