That is unfortunate, I hate how all parts become obsolete even though when functioning properly its still a good design. Gotta love our throw-away society
Picked up a 1356 this afternoon at the wrecking yard, take it back to the shop I tore down inspected it to make sure everything was okay inside. Pick up to look like it had been replaced already and the plastic pad look brand new as well as the shift forks. Re sealed it , way better design then the 1345 inside. I should get it installed tonight and we will see how how it looks
Will first problem... anybody know of a conversion u-joint for the rear output? Yoke on the new case is smaller, front output is the same as the old so that's good to do..
There are conversion u-joints available. If you measure both sides you should be able to get one easily enough. They are easy enough to find if you have the measurements for both sides and do a search.

I still have the case/yoke.. I guess I'll head down to Napa tomorrow.... new 1356 is smaller and old 1345 is bigger go figure
The only thing that I needed differently was two of the caps had to be a hair smaller, that's where the percision u joint part number 355 came in.. Used the caps off of it to go on the other u joint that I bought, I did measure the outside of the cross when the Caps were off, diameter to make sure that they were correct. They were both identical so I just swapped to of the caps lol if that makes any sense. So I just have to remember / write the part numbers down which I did on the frame.. Now I have a updated transfer case and one that is operating and shifting correctly now. now that I have had both cases open I would choose a 56 any day of the week, better engineered/design on the insides. I'll post of a video tomorrow afternoon of the install

My guess is the 1356 came from a gas truck, I believe they used smaller u-joints than the diesel trucks. I ended up needing a conversion u-joint at the differential as I ended up using a gas transfer case and driveshaft but the axle u-joint is bigger.
