Got a 92 f-150 with a 4.9 six cyc. last week it started to squeal and scream from the belt originally I thought alternator. Turns out it is the smog air pump located right below my alternator seized up tighter the Fort Knox. I took off the belt and roped the pulleys to take it off the loop just so I can move the thing around for now. Does anyone know. Do I need the smog air pump? And what harm will it do if I take it out of the loop for now and run the truck here and there? It's my back up/ plow truck. Only need to use it if we get major snow. Thanks guys. Also thanks for the answers on my other thread about the 3G change over greatly appreciated and very helpful.
Gates k060815 belt will by pass the smog pump. My smog pump is rattling and pulley has wobble to it so I by passed it until i can afford to replace it or have time to cleanly remove it, haven't made up my mind yet.
Gut the cat/cats if its still there on the truck if you don't have any smog testing in your area or get it replaced with the newer style cat that don't need the air pump or it will clog up sometime down the road and cause you an unneeded hassle and like the others said just bypass the pump with a shorter belt.
