I have an '88 F250 with a 460cid engine and the C6 transmission. It runs fairly well but recently has developed an issue I am at a loss for.
When the transmission is moved from park into reverse, the engine starts to run exceptionally rough. Not like it is in a bind and bogging down but rather it runs as though 3 cylinders have shut off. It will continue this regardless of whether or not you increase the RPM. It starts to smoke really badly as well. The impression I get is that for some reason the engine is moving into an excessively rich mode but I can't imagine why. It will generally clears up when you put it into drive or park but every so often it the problem will continue regardless of what gear the transmission is in. Turning the engine off, leaving it for a few minutes and turning it back on will usually clear the issue.
If anyone has any suggestion as where to start looking at this I would appreciate the input.
