hey guys whats up, i just got a simple question for ya, right now im running 10w40 in my 89 bronco, its very cold right now, and it raps for a few seconds on start up after its been sitting. well its coming up on my next oil change and well, im wondering if switching to 5w30 would be advisable , not just for the winter but for the long run too, any suggestions?
What's your location? I would never run 10W-40 in winter in a Ford small block in Wyoming, unless the engine is an oil burner. I vote for 5W-30 semi-synthetic. If it uses or leaks oil in the summer, then bump it back up to 10W-40.
Start up tapping.
Use only Motorcraft or Purolater oil filter because they have anti drain back check valves. Your filter will not be empty of oil on start up.
Oil weight.
Ford has recommendations on a chart somewhere for year and engine. Start by looking for a sticker somewhere under the hood. Most wear occurs at start up until the oil stabilizes and oil pressure drops a little. I believe the most important oil number is the first one. Lower is better for flow at start up. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...20w50-oil.html
Gauge
Get a good truly mechanical oil gauge and disconnect the stock one. Do it for water temp also.
