Air pump making noise?!?
You can't hear it in the truck, but once you get out of the cab and walk to the front of the truck you can hear it.
Oddly enough it SEEMS to go away sometimes when you turn the heater from "DEF" to "OFF", but that could have been a coincidence. That would make more sense if it was from the drivers side, I would suspect the A/C compressor.
So my question is, could it be the air pump? I spun it the last time I had the belts off and it didn't feel super smooth, but not horrible either... Possibly the bearings are gone on it? Maybe the alternator, but it seems to be coming from lower down.
Ideally I'd like to remove the air but cant seem to find a detailed set of instructions on the process, and what is required... I ditched it on my '79 Bronco years back, but most of it had been disabled already
Biggest thing I guess would be needing a shorter belt? Anyone know the belt #, or just measure and go to the parts store?
Any info would be great...
I've also hear of guys just taking the guts out of the pump, but not knowing whether it's the bearings or the internals that usually lock up, I'd be careful doing it. Gutting it won't help if the bearings are prone to failure, which it seems most air pumps do tend to lock up.
As far as removing it goes, the one I did was basically just plugging the lines to the exhaust. Then remove the fresh air plumbing, but leave any solenoids in place and make sure they stay plugged in so you don't get the check engine light. This was on a 302 car though, the trucks might be plumbed differently. Someone will post with details I'm sure.

Ideas?!?!?
Take the belt off, put some paracord or similar material around the pulley and pull it like a starter rope... if it makes noise then it's junk. Or if it's bad enough you'll feel it grind just by turning it with your hand.
EDIT: when the noise came back was it because you turned the fan back on? If it was still off then it ain't your fan.
