? about the dana 60

i have a few ?'s about the dana 60. the first is i heard that the casings are different for different size gears. i heard that there is one for the 4.56 and up and one for the higher gears. my problem is that mine had 5.37's in it and i went to the 4.10's. when trying to pu the carrier in in bound up the ring and pinion gears to where they couldnt be turned at all. so i was going to go back to my 5.37's. just wondering if this was true or not. also i have the old pinion bearing but i cant seem to find the old race, just wondering how much damage could occur if i use the old bearing with a new race. cant seem to find the old one and i cant afford a new one. i went with the gear change becuase i found a nice used posi unit for the front which is a dana 44 and it all readu had 4.10 gears on it. i wanted to go to a smaller tire as well, 33-12.5's. right now im running 36-14.5's which i know is too big for the dana 44. how well will running 5.37's with 33-12.5's do. will it be too much gear for that small of a tire. the truck is a 77 ford f250 4x4. thanx

I do believe that there are different carriers because of the change in pinion size on the lower ratios. I would think you could find a bare carrier fairly cheap. There were a million fords with dana 60 rear's that you could steal one out of. Go check a junkyard. If there's one there it's almost certainly for the higher gears(numerically lower).

I know of a few people who have d44 up front running 38's as well as 40's and they are just fine. The one guy with the 40's (tsl or boggers) had a locked d60 first. blew it apart and put the d44 in after and been fine ever since. I also have 44 front with 35's.
thought id share that,

Yeah, I don't think that 35's are too much for a 44. I'm planning on building a 1/2 ton mudder and run 36's on it with the stock 9" and 44. That's what I had on my 79 and I never broke it.
