Total Swap

I own a "96", F150, 4x4, auto trany, 302, reg cab and a "97", F150, 4x4, auto trany, super cab. I was thinking of trading the son for his "97", F150, 4x4, standard, reg cab as it has about 400km on the engine and getting to the point where an engine replacment is due. I'm really put off by all the sensors, relays, electronics, computor chip tech and I WANT TO DO A COMPLETE SWAP. So far everybody has been basically saying that it's easier to just purchase a "85" or earlier model and go from there.
One auto recker said the "96" would be an easier job but being automatic it's hooked electronically and that presents a problem. Another says the (son's standard truck)"97" because of it being standard may be easier but the transfer case may present a problem.
My perferance is to do a complete sway with the son's "97", swap out the engine, trany, etc. for something far less techno. I want to keep the "97" as I like the style, suspention, 16" wheels, etc.
Has anyone tried swapping to a (from a 4.6 liter to a 302 or 351) carbureted system, I know this means changing trany to mate with the engine and also the transfer case, plus other modifications.
