Anyone using a CAI that actually gives and increase in performance? Specifically in fuel economy? I know CAI work at high rpm but we rarely operate in that range. I was looking Volant. I'm looking for something that actually works down were we operate the most or should I just put a K&N filter in and call it good?
Best thing you can do to increase mileage would be to leave stock airbox in tack and use a factory paper filter, and use a lighter foot on the throttle pedal. The K&Ns can be over-oiled if not done properly and cause issues with the MAF. CAIs will make plenty of noise but, lose some low-end torque and usually hurt mileage.
A CAI isn't going to do much if anything for mpg. If your still hell bent on changing the filter out, try a synthetic media filter instead of the oiled gauze. I am running an AEM drop in filter and no complaints so far.

Leave it stock, use good paper filters and keep them fresh, air up your tires properly, keep your fluids fresh, keep your MAF sensor clean, keep your throttle body clean, and keep your right foot on a diet. If there was anything to all of the gimmicks and aftermarket stuff out there, don't ya think Ford would be putting it all on to start with? All manufacturers are competing for fuel economy. If all these aftermarket things had any "weight" to them, our trucks would come with them on as original equipment. But, it's your wallet and I'm not one to tell you how to use it.
09 and '10 are the same. gDM Joe is saying the snorkel got much bigger starting in '11 I guess so it's a non-issue. IIRC in my '10 I just removed the snorkel altogether

A slight word of caution on this, I was watching videos on youtube of the "gotts mod" after seeing it mentioned in this thread. The guy who removed the snorkel all together ended up with a bunch of leaves and debris on the dirty side of the filter:
I'm gonna check mine here shortly. Wow that is surprising, but mine stays in the garage at night. Thanks for the video, I'd rep ya but i just did for Chandler so I'll have to owe ya. I wonder if that could be squirrels or something that put them there?

Good point, it seems very strange that all that crap would just "end up" in there. Wonder if the truck was stored outside and some animal was making a home...
