49 wiper arm

49 wiper arm
I have a 1949 F1 that I am at the point in the rebuild of reinstalling the windshield wiper assembly. The approx. 1/8"X3/4"X14" flat bar arm that connects the motor to the right side has an approximately 1/2" hole where the arm attaches to the 1/8" motor pivot pin. I am missing the part that works as a bushing or bearing that goes in the 1/2" hole and don't know what it looks like or where I can purchase a new one.

To Doug.
I don't have a Build Thread. I am glad to be on the down heal side of this project. I have the wiring about 3/4 completed and decided it would be easier too install the wiper assembly before I put the dash panel back in. That is when I noticed the wiper arm problem. There has to be some sort of a bushing in the arm hole for the pin to push and rotate on. The pin also has a groove near its top that I think a spring clip must clip on to hold the arm in place. I don't have a shop manual for my truck but I wonder if it has a picture that shows the wiper assembly.

I think this might be it
here's a link to a page of the LMC catalog
Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
Look in the diagram on the opper right corner of the page. Item #10, part # 40-1220
That might be it.
Also, look at the bottom diagram, they show a linkage (item #4) that has the bushing in it but no listing for them seperately. I also did a google search for "ford wiper linkage bushings" and got all sorts of results. There's bound to be something that would work.
I havent gotten around to wipers yet, we haven't had enough rain here in New Mexico to worry about wipers....LOL

I ordered one of the grommets, Pc 10 from LMC. It fits in the arm hole perfect but the grommet ID is 5/16" and the pivot arm shaft OD that it fits on is 1/8". I made a plastic bushing to fit tight on the pivot arm shaft and snug to the grommet ID. This solved that problem. The spring clip, Pc #11, should work. I am using a Quadrajet throttle linkage spring clip on mine.

Ken I'm glad you posted this. My bushings looks like it is brass with little nubs on it. But I have a 53. The reason I'm glad you posted is I looked at the link to LMC because I pulled a motor off of a 90 Jeep Cherokee and it was suppose to be an almost bolt in replacement. When I got home with it, it wasn't even close! After looking at the diagram I realized I left the bracket on the jeep! Oh well another trip to pull a parts is in my future. As for the bushing get a local machine shop to turn you one out. The little nubs or splines make it fit tight in the arm.

Yeah I guess your right ALBUQ. I guess that's why I never went into business for my self. I have a small machine shop and I could never charge someone for something like that. I have made all kinds of one-offs for friends. Maybe Ken can finds some one close with a hobby lathe. Brass or plastic type materials are easy to work with.

I have purchased the part # 51A-17562 from LMC. They use their own numbering system (40-1220) but it is the same part as sold at Dennis Carpenter and Mac's. It is a rubber grommet that fits in the arm hole. The grommet ID is about .321" and the pivot arm pin that it fits on is .211". It is this .110" that I need a bushing for. I bought an oversized nylon bushing from Ace Hardware and turned it down, then drilled out the ID and cut it to length. It fits tight on the pin and allows the bushing to grommet to move freely. Ace also had some thin nylon washers/shims that have the correct ID to fit over the pin before the spring clip is installed to hold every thing together. It is all assembled and bolted back in the truck. The vacuum wiper motor was replaced with a new after market 12v motor.

The electric wiper motor that I used is made by New Port Engineering. I installed one of their motors in my 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe 6 years ago. It was easy to install and works perfect. That proved their product so I bought another one from them that is for my 49 F1. It was easy to install using the existing bolt holes that lined up perfect. They also provide a support bar that attaches the motor to an existing hole located in the dash brace. No forcing, bending, tweaking or hammering required. The electrical connections to the provided wiper switch was simple, all you need is a 12V electrical source.
