Got up today and started my 66 f100 had been sitting a few weeks and started a little hard like normal but started. the engine rand fine for a few then stalled out and died, stared again and same thing, just died 3 more times. now it will not start at all.
Now it seems to crank forever then maybe backfire on Exhaust and Intake (flames out carb) at times, do a very short sputter run and die.
What I have done With my Stock 352cid:
Checked for fuel spray in carb.
Checked for spark it seemed good on all but was really sunny out and hard to see.
Checked plug wires for resistance.
Checked plugs (wet but looked good and just changed 2 months ago with points, condencer, coil, Dist cap, and wires)
Reset point gap
Checked for 12v at + side of Coil
Cleaned ground from engine to firewall
Took off carb and tore apart and cleaned it
Checked timing chain to rotor and seems fine no play really at all.
Put at TDC on a compression stroke and rotor points to no.1.
i'm kinda at a loss right now and wife wanted me to take a break from working on it so I told her sure and came here to see if any one had any ideas.
That is the reason I tore apart the carb to see if I could see any water in the float bowl. I also filled up a 1/2 gallon glass container from the fuel pump line to see if water would settle to bottom. I didn't see the little water blobs form at bottom after sitting for 30 mins. Was almost my first thought too because of the huge rain storm we had a bit ago.
You have checked the bases , correct ? All are proper ? Time to think out of the box ... ethanol content ? Check the base items to be sure ,Fire ,Fuel , Compression ,Timing . An ethanol % test is easy to do . I have seen issues ...
getting fuel, getting fire, compression is 1: 171, 2: 169, 3: 174, 4: 171, 5: 175, 6: 171, 7: 177 8: 168 I just checked. little low but not to bad far as I see for that old of an engine. Been getting my fuel from the same place for all my cars for years and have filled up all 5 of them and no problems with any but this truck.
Have someone crank it for you and check timing with a timing light while cranking . That will also let you see if you are dropping fire while cranking .
Checked spark again today, seems odd like strong at first then fades out to a orange after a bit or or a misfire on plug after cranking a bit. checked the resistance on the coil it was 1.7 at Primary Resistance and 10.3k at Secondary Resistance. Points seem to fire like crazy bright blue/white spark. checked with another new in box plug wire I had and was same at plug.
has new plugs, wires, points condenser, dist cap and rotor the good ones not aluminum.
Still no start and pulling hairs out here.
Thru out old condenser couldn't test it. went and traded in for a new one i got and it fired off. runs real nice now got the proper spark i need, thanks a lot for the help.
the thing that was messing with me most was the old "new" condenser was having a intermittent problem and trying to fire the engine but would stop. got love new faulty parts to make you pull hairs out.. thanks again guys.
