cetane boost additive

What do you think of power service cetane boost in gray bottle?? Ford mechanic reccomends and hear ads on farm programs a lot. Is it needed?? How often????

We run several John Deere engines from 1-10 years old. Interesting how little fuel additives are promoted by Deere. While they seem to be the thing for pickups.

I use PS grey bottle every fill up during warm weather, and use PS white bottle during colder weather to help prevent fuel jelling. PS is used by a lot of diesel owners, and has been for years. Good stuff.

I do the same. I've been using Diesel Kleen for years.

It provides lubrication to the fuel system which the ultra low sulfer diesel lacks. Keeps injectors happy

I use it every fill up also. Once, for a whole month during the summer, I was unable to use the additive and noticed not only more frequent regen times but the truck just didn't run as well. Almost like it lacked a little power. And with the lower lubricity content of the ultra low diesel fuels we have to run, it's imperative in keeping the fuel injectors AND the fuel pump happy. You don't even want to know what the high pressure fuel pump will cost you to have Ford replace it. So it's cheap maintenance if you want longevity out of your engine. And who doesn't?

I use the cetane boost in the clear Bottle from the Ford house every fill up , not sure it helps or not but they say it keeps the fuel system lubed ?

Same here, either the Ford stuff or PS grey bottle. I'm in the south so no gelling worries for me!

I've been using PS since truck was new. No need for winter formula. I occasionally run a couple pints of marine two stroke in a tank (Not recommended if your DPF is still in place).

Use PowerService DieselKleen in every gallon of fuel. Peterbilt has 980,000 mi. with no fuel system problems at all. Also run it in my 6.4. Have a 1000 gal. tank at home and put the concentrate in before every bulk delivery. If you can find an oil distributor who sells the 2 1/2 gal. jugs of concentrate you will save over 50% on the cost. I think the concentrate is about 1 oz. to 10 gals. of fuel. I have been told the Ford brand diesel fuel conditioner is PowerService in a Ford bottle.

Sweet!

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware they made such a thing. Looks like it will run about $50 and treat 1000 gallons! Might need an eye dropper for my measly 30.5 gallon tank.

In these modern diesels you do not "need" a cetane booster of any kind in the winter to avoid jelling I prefer Howes treatment I have had better results and havent had to replace a single filter due to jelling since I switched from power service

Or just move to Texas! Never even concerned about the remote possibility of gelled filters.

Depends where in Texas, Im in the panhandle of Texas and it gets plenty cold here at times. And not to many people in Texas by most standards, but by Wyoming standards Im sure we are way over populated.

I've been using DK for quite some time and have noticed no benefit in mpg or regens. It does seem to make the truck run bit smoother though.

I think it also depends on where you get your fuel. I use Shell or Chevron almost exclusively now. I had a crap tank of Valero diesel when I tried to save a few $$ because it was cheaper, but that was a mistake.
