Park problem

My 66 F-250 won't stay in park, seems something in the column may be broken. There is no detent, it'll fall right into reverse with very little effort. Any pointers out there before i tear it apart?

Park problem

Disconnect the linkage to the trans, manually engage park. Rock the truck, if you hear it click and it wont move, it's in park and the linkage is the culprit. If it will not engage, your park pawl make be broken and can be replaced while still in the vehicle.

A sure fire way to prevent this is to get in the habit of using the E-brake every time you park the truck. The pawl was not designed to hold the weight of the truck.

It's a C6, the tranny is fine, the poroblem is in the column. Ya know how you pull forward on the lever before it'll drop out of park? Ya dont have to pull forward on this one. Whats inside thats broke?

I wasn't aware you had to pull on the lever. None of my other pre-70 vehicles have ever needed to pull forward on the lever, but I have never had a 61-66 automatic before either.

Was it engaging before?

I just bought the truck, the motor was out. On my comet, you cant pull straight down out of park, you have to pull forward, then down. Maybe its ok

If its falling out of park, you definatly have a problem. You may be right and it is the column or The detent in the trans is worn from letting the truck rest in park without the E-brake on. Another possibility is that the cab mounts are worn out and the linkage has fallen out of adjustment. Try readjusting the linkage and see if it will stay in park.
