i recently lost my pinion nut while driving down street. i went and got one for a 9" rear axle, which is what i thought i had. it was tight so i went back to the place and got some other nuts. all of those was way too big. so i muscled the one on that i had intially.i got it almost as far as it needed to be and then the lady from the rear end shop called and said she had another one that was probably the one i need.
i went and got the other nut,but now i can't get the one i forced off! i really put some twork on it. i havn't tried an impact yet, but i'm gonna try that tommorrow. i don't think that even that will get it though. i've cheetah bar and everything else.
whats more i think i've done busted something loose from inside the rear end when i was gettin' the nut on there as far as i did.
two questions: i would like any suggestions on getting that thing off (spray, technique, etc.). also i would like to know some opinions on whats the most possible thing i probably messed up in there. the bolts all loose and stuff now. well thanks in advance for any suggestions.
First off, what makes you think something is broken?
If it's a 9", you can remove the 5 bolts on the pinion housing and pull the housing out of the dif.. This will allow you to inspect the pinion without pulling the axles and removing the whole center section. It'll also allow you to take the pinion to the place you got the nuts from, and get the right nut.
As for removing the nut, I'd use the impact. If it's the wrong nut and you had to force it on that hard, chances are the damage is already done. Hopefully, if it is the wrong nut, you only damaged the nut and not the shaft.
thanks alot. i think i'll look at that thing a little more. i'm gonna hook the shaft back up now so i can try to limp the truck over to the guys house with the impact(he only lives like six blocks away). if it sounds too bad i won't even attempt to get it there. but anyway thanks again, you've helped me with a few things on this site.
