97 expedition question

97 expedition question

hi, i was wondering if someone could tell me what size wrench it takes to undo the drive shaft at the rear axel, i am going friday to pick one up with a car dolly that is 4 hours from me and want to make sure i have the right size wrench with me, thanks in advance

I believe you need a 12 point 12mm socket. I know the front driveshaft has the 12mm bolts and I'm fairly certain the rear uses the same. If anything the rears could be 13mm or 14mm at most, but they're still 12 point. It has to be 12 point because the OEM bolt heads are 12 point and not hexagon. This is all assuming the bolts are original. The bolts were also torqued to 85 ft. lbs. and now you have some rust to boot. So be prepared and have a breaker bar with you. Also have at least 12" of extension otherwise the driveshaft will prevent the socket from going on straight. Don't forget to bring something to plug the tranny from leaking out the driveshaft hole.

Just an FYI for you. When you use a dolly the towed vehicle has to be registered because the rear wheels are on the road. If it's not registered you need a full car carrier to put the entire vehicle up on. I'd hate to see a cop pull you over 3 hours from home.

thank you, for the quick reply, i knew my bronco was 12 point but couldnt rember the size, that was only 8 years ago too, thank you again, and it is registered, i just couldnt find anyone to go with me to pick it up
