What is the deal with the E4OD transmissions. What are some things to look for when buying a truck with an E4OD. What are some common problems with the E4OD. Also I assume that you can turn the overdrive off when pulling a trailer, am I right?

Your E4OD should have a power switch for the overdrive to turn on and off as you require. For some reason these transmissions are not made to withstand a lot of heat and therefore do breakdown frequently. The best advice for these is to install a tranny cooler and have the fluid changed at least every 50,000 km, especially if it is used to tow or 4 wheel.

It took until '95 to work out all of the bugs. The lifespan runs all the way from 75,000 to 175,000 miles. The torque converter clutch ranks as one of the most frequent failures. There is an aluminum gear carrier in some earlier versions. Electric solenoids constantly bathed in hot oil also fail. Get one that was already rebuilt/upgraded, get one with a history of regular transmission oil changes, or price the truck based on a possible $1200-$2000 rebuild.
