Question Turn signal/brake problems

68 F250 2WD 360 Camper Special Manual EVERYTHING (for the time being) Super straight old reliable truck for the price (free!)

However,

One of several annoying problems I have is that one (LF) turn signal operates with reliably. The park lights all work, no brake lights and the RR turn signal worked for a while until the mood ran out. I've got a funky worn out steering wheel (no horn ring, the horn's wired in under the dash with a HUGE button) and cheesy wiring that I've repaired as well as possible, but a steering column or turn signal wiring diagram would be a god send. Oh yeah, the back up lights are non-op too, but I know that's because the neutral safety switch arm is broken inside the column (which you'll find posted in my other thread, and BTW received LOTS of very helpful info on that fix, many thanx again.)

I'm seeing several requests for wiring diagrams with responses either routing the thread back to places to purchase them but no actual wiring diagrams! Aren't there any nice guys (hint hint) out there willing to scan and send a copy of a wiring diagram? Or better yet, there must be a link/site out there in Fordland that lists that info for free, right?

Turn signal/brake problems

Sorry, no wire diagram. I had a problem with my RF parking light and the brake lights. Assuming that you've already checked the actual lamps being burned out, the second step I took with the brake lights were to check out the brake light switch. It just needed adjustment. Then for the parking lights, I switched them on and started probing with a test light from the wire of the problem light until I found actual power. This pinpointed the approximate area of the problem (burned/severed wire). For your turn signal. Check to see if your flasher actually works any turn lights. Then switch the turn signal to the position of the problem light. You may have to leave the key on to do this. Start using your test light from the wire of the problem light and start probing back until you get the test light to flash. That will be your approximate problem area. It took me a few hours to find my problem. Good luck.

Turn signal/brake problems

The test light method is your best bet. Once you get the hang of tracing the power path. On the brake lights I would start under the dash as follows; Power to the brake light switch? Power out of the brake light switch? Power into the turn signal switch? Power out of the turn signal switch on two wires? If that is all ok go under the back of the truck and check there. This wiring will most likely be old and brittle and if the truck ever had trailer lights wired in expect it to be a mess that needs major attention. Most of these will have had the installation done with the type of connecter that clamps over the wire with a spade that is pushed through the insulation of both wires. These are junk and you need to get rid of them and solder the wires or use butt splice connecters. You can trace out the turn signals in the same manner by probing at the turn signal wire connecter and then going under the truck. A lot of these old trucks had the steering collumn replace due to the shifter bowl breaking and even though the used column of choice may have fit, the wiring may be different. I have used different year parts that look right but found that Ford moved the location of the wires around in the turn signal connecters from year to year. This can be very confusing and will require a good bit of head scratching to figure out, but can be remedied by moving the wires in the connecter. You will need a small screwdriver or pick to release the catch on each wire in the connecter to get them to release. Once you get it all straightened out, put the correct flasher in so it doesn't flash if either the front or rear bulb is inoperative for any reason. That way you will know when you have any problems. Good luck

We have copyright laws.

If there were many sites online offering them for free, HOW would they sell any ?

Why wouldn't you be willing to invest a few bucks into something that you can have readily available at home?

Also, there are already some of these illustrations you are asking about available on the FTE site in this & the electrical forum.

All you have to do is do a search for *Steering column wiring*
