Hey guys, I just bought a 6.0 truck that is having low boost issues. It only gets around 11 psi at WOT. Anyways, I had it diagnosed at the dealership and they say it needs a new charged air cooler. My question is should I waste the money on another stock one or buy an aftermarket one?
Notes: The truck also has a Garrett Powermax turbo and the tech said if I don't put a stock turbo back on the truck I will be replacing the intercooler again.
I am not planning on running any big tunes in this truck.
If your planning to keep the truck for awhile I see no down side to buying a quality aftermarket and maybe get a little more performance out of it at the same time. You can get used stock ones for pretty darn cheap tho if you just want to get back on road an them upgrade.
Just a thought. Make sure to check your boots for cracks. You could be losing boost that way. Check all connections. Especially the inlet by the turbo. Usually they split on the backside where you can't see it. Just take them off squeeze them and look for cracks. Depending on the year of your rig your cold side air inlet is plastic. Riffraff diesel sells a replacement that is aluminum with new boots. What color are your boots? The early ones were updated with a better boot. Also, do you smell exhaust in the cab? If so, check your Y-pipe. They are known for cracking also after awhile. You'll be losing boost that way also.. I'll be taking my intercooler off this spring and doing the CCV mod and cleaning my intercooler at the same time.
Let us know what you find.
P.S. On another note. You might consider doing the CCV Mod (relocating the oil Crank Case vent tube) before installing a new intercooler or cleaning your old one. You'll just send the oil right back into your new cooler contaminating your cooler again negating the reason for having a clean oil free cooler that will provide better efficiency. JMHO.
Xaviar,
Thanks for the additional input. The intercooler failed a pressure test but I am definitely planning on looking at the boots as well when I take it apart. They are blue in color. The air inlet is metal. I hadn't heard of the CCV mod until now.
Just do a search on CCV mod for the 6.0. As I understand it or heard, the 6.0 is pressure senstive to certain types it seems. There are many kits out there or you can just pipe it out to the atmosphere. I bought a Racor for my 7.3 and sold it. It seems its a toss up as to weather the racor unit is good for the 6.0 or not??? Others here can chime in on the subject for ended up getting one from some one here who makes them. Just do a little research on them before buying one. There's a lot of info here and people who have very good input.
I haven't put mine on yet for I haven't cleaned my intercooler yet. This spring I'll be doing both. As far as intercoolers you have Mishimoto, Turbonetics and Banks. My personal preference would be a Mishimoto 1st, Turbonetics 2nd and Banks They all are decent. I think the Banks comes with new boots and pipes though. Check there websites.
banks is 1200 and only comes in a kit ,big mouth intake scoop 3"-4" cac tubes and boots and maybe band clamps. friend just bought one because his charge air cooler blew the orange o=ring out after he heard a bang and lost power. New rebuild with a banks six gun, told him to save money for a new tranny.

Your tech is definitely wrong. I've been running a larger than stock turbo for about 120K miles that boosts to 35+psi, still have my stock intercooler, and have only replaced one blue elbow boot (knock on wood).
I just put on a Mishimoto and love the quality. Not sure on EGTs yet as I did a bunch of other mods at the same time and am having a few issues. Really well made. Bought their radiator too.
Hey guys,
I put on the intercooler I got from ebay and I still have low boost(11 psi). I looked at the boots and they all seemed OKish. The one that connects to the turbo did have some minor cracking on the bottom of it. I'm not sure how to upload a picture, but none of the splits look like they are all the way through the boot.
Do you have a Scangauge ll, or something to monitor your engine? Did you have any codes? I wonder if your turbo vanes are stuck? If you dont have something like a scangauge, edge, etc......you might invest in one of those first. That way you can look at most if not all sensors on your truck an see what your engine is doing. readings like...EGT, EOT, FWT, (VGT which would be your turbo), IPR just to name a few. Do you have gauges? If not. Pick up a scangauge ll or Edge. Do you still have the cat installed? How about the air filter? Is it stock or aftermarket? Do a search on little or no boost.
The map sensor directly can do this,,, the little rubber hose on the passenger side of the intake manifold. I'd be removing it and cleaning. Also clean the bung on the intake. Also clean the ebp sensor that has a steel tube coming off the driver side exhaust manifold. It'd be nice to get map, baro, n ebp psi at koeo. All need to be within .5.
