So apparently i have something a little different on my 1996 f150. I am checking out some p0174 0171 codes and started with the PCV assembly.
What i found was that the place where the assembly meets the valve cover below the PCV valve is different that the picture in this thread. Instead of having a short 90 deg bend, i have some sort of cap which the hose from the PCV valve connects too. This is shown in my picture which is taken from the right side of bank 1. I think that there is the grommet underneath of this cap. You may be able to see a gap between the bottom of the cap and the valve cover. The cap is loose and I though might be part of the problem.
I can't get the cap or the hose leading into it, to remove. There doesnt seem to be enough space to get the cap out but i can feel it slide up and down...
Thoughts? why doesnt this fit tight? all i can think of is that someone replaced the factory stuff with aftermarket and it doesnt fit right....
Here is a link to a thread talking generally about PCV valve assembly replacement. The picture of the guys holding the whole assembly is what I expected to see and is consistent with other information ive seen. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...l#post13942018
I'm not sure why you'd have a different set up, but I don't know why you couldn't just get a stock set up (new or from a junkyard) and replace what's there.
Well it wouldn't surprise me if there's a lip on the end of the cap that's there to keep it from slipping out while the engine is running. You may just need to use a screwdriver or pliers to get some leverage on it.
You might also need to pull it one direction or the other to get it to come out- just because there's not enough direct overhead clearance doesn't mean it can't be removed.
Thanks for the input. I guess I should clarify that getting the tube part off wouldn't be enough. I've got to get that cap off or figure out why it has so much play. I believe this is causing some lean cylinder codes.
Its almost like someone stuck a breather cap like this one on there...you can see how it has a 90 degree connection onto which a tube would connect.

I have tried twisting and turning the thing all over but dont want to break anything off while i dont really know what im dealing with...
Well my last bit of advice is to remove anything that's over the top of it to give you the clearance needed to remove it. That, or just live with it and make it work...
mine was a pain to remove too, i kinda broke it to come off and sat there with the tube and a pick to get all the plastic pieces out. knew what i was dealing with though which always helps. so, what im getting at is sometimes they go in nice, but to get them out ya gotta be violent sometimes. its like anger management in a way haha
Sdshipe, I am fighting the exact same thing on my 1996 F250 351. Were you ever able to get your pcv out without breaking it or removing the plenum? I am fighting a lean code as well. Mine is terribly loose and may be a vacuum source leak. Interested in what you may have figured out or if infact you fixed your lean code.
