How To Replace a Box
There are 6 bolts on a 1990 F150 short box, and 8 on a long box.
The nuts on the under side of the box are usually rusted on and you will spend more time removing them then what it is worth to grind them off and pick up some used replacements from a junk yard.
Instead of getting the stock replacement bolts, get the bolts and frame clips from a Bronco. This will eliminate the need to climb under your truck and remove gas tanks, or have a hell of a time with the rusted nuts in the future.
1. Grind the tops off of each bolt in the truck bed.
2. Using a punch or an old screwdriver, hammer the bolts through the box. They may not fall all the way through but this is not a problem.
3. Unclip your wiring to the tail lights, located behind your rear bumper.
4. Remove the gas tank filler neck by opening your gas door, and undo the 3 screws located there.
5. Rock the box back and forth a bit to loosen it up from the frame.
6. Check that the box is coming off of the frame. If any of the bolts are still holding the box on, get out your jack and a 2X4... Jack the box off of the frame using the 2X4 to get the hight you need.
7. Using a few of your strong friends or wife
pick the box off of the truck. When your are putting the box back on, use the new Bronco bolts and frame clips. The bronco bolts have a Hex pattern on the top of them so you can just climb up into your box and undo them from the top.
