I am having new shocks put on my truck this saturday, the mechanic took the truck for a test drive and is concerned about a popping noise..Has anyone had that problem and if so what did you do to fix it..
Have you ever heard the noise? Where does it come from? What do you have to do to get it to pop? Does it do it ALL the time, or only under certain conditions? What damage/repairs/modifications have been done over the life of the truck?
The more info you give, the better answers you'll get.
There was a running TSB from ~'82-98 on these trucks covering the rivets in the frame's front crossmember.
Occassionally the tranny support where it mounts to the frame rails while the truck is turning make a loud popping noise. Usally one pop then its gone till next time.
My 1995 F150 started doing the same thing recently. I changed shocks myself last summer. Sometimes when I first take off I hear the same kind of noise. I swear it is coming from the right rear but I can't find anything.
New tight shocks may hide it for a while, but if you didn't find a worn-out bushing on an old shock, the noise will probably come back in a few thousand miles or less.
about the only thing you can do is have a friend drive the truck while you hang out in the bed and listen carefully for the noise, to try and pinpoint it.
One one of my Volvos, I had this incessant rattling. I mean REALLY annoying. after a year of chasing it, I traced it to the Boge Turbogas shocks I had bought. Apparently one batch made in Mexico were all doing this. The shocks worked, but had this slight play when going from up to down motion. Not in the bushings, but internally...
Man, once I found out what it was, I was happy to know, but angry that I paid extra for premium shocks that were screwed up.
Anyway, with the truck off, yank, push, pull it in all directions, in an attempt to recreate the noise. then listen while riding. Then maybe stand on the ground and listen while someone drives away..
I hate noises.. they make me worry (when I probably shouldn't)
I had a popping on my 92 f150 too. you only heard it when you romped on the gas or if I was on a bumpy road. The popping noise came from the front end.
I replaced the bushings to find the bracket for the I-beam bushing had two bolts broken inside of the frame. Hence the popping came from the Bracket moving.
