cooling problem?

Hi all from cold and snowy Chicago. Had a problem with my '99 E-150 this morning that I could use some guidance with. I'ts -12 degrees here so I started the van to let it warm up. It did reach operating temperature so when I got about 2 blocks down the road, the red coolant warning light came on and the service engine light. Drove back home and found the following:

1. engine still at normal temp
2. could hear and see coolant bubbling in the reservoir but appeared to be from air and not overheating.

Let the engine sit for a while then on restart the red warning light went off and service warning still on. Came up with code 1299 at Autozone. Coolant level is correct and van ran fine the whole time. tried disconnecting the battery to clear the code but no luck. any help would be great. Thanks

I live in the Chicago area as well. It was -17 to -18 degrees here this morning.

A few years ago I was on my way to work on a very cold day, not as cold as now but still cold. It was a Fox Mustang V8 and it started to overheat.
I let it cool some and then drove it home in short spurts as it would get very hot after only a few minutes.

I went out and got a new thermostat and that fixed the overheating.

If your seeing bubbles in the overflow tank, I would think of a blown head gasket. At those temps it shouldn't get warmed up just setting and idling, maybe just off the C mark from a cold start...........

Assuming your CEL code was a P1299 that's "engine over temperature condition" which you already know. I'm assuming Autozone cleared the code for you? I don't know that would reset itself without at least 10 times restarting without the PCM seeing or experiencing that same condition.

Never the less I'm with the stuck T'stat too. Since it seemingly unstuck itself and all was well afterwards that's just further strong suggestion of that being the culprit. I'd change it out ASAP, weather permitting of course.

The bubbles in the over flow reservoir would be of big concern to me---definitely check your oil for mixing with coolant, hoping that's NOT an issue!

well took her out again this a:m, -11 and no lights came on but about 4 blocks down the road the temp guage was heading towards an overheat so I shut her off. have been working close to home so have been driving it with no time to fix. think I will change the thermostat and see what that does. the coolant looks ok and I was able to clear the code by disconnecting the battery. also the oil has no sign of coolant

That's all good news then, especially the oil looking like a chocolate milkshake!

Hope its nothing more severe than the t'stat.
