You can do better for the same $, or less. Their newest line (where everything is hexagonal) is a little too "gimmicky" for me. Xtant they are not. I'm sure quality control and performance of their car audio gear is the same ol' same ol'. Alpine and Pioneer make similarly priced equipment that is far better.
I dont like to brand bash, but in a word: C_R_A_P
Sony's older equipment was pretty good. In fact, I still own a Sony CDX-C780 mobile ES head unit from about 5 years ago?...
Its in the closet waiting for someone to take it off my hands.
Their new equipment is based on aestetics not quality. They have given products a "bold new" RED color(LOL) and have started making hexagonal subs. Like luvdeftonz said...its too gimmicky.
They must have given the line the "Xplod" name for a reason....
It really is too bad, though. Their old ES line used to be very nice. They found they can make more money on volume, though. So out went quality, in came "bold, new look". Oh well. Their video equipment (dvd, vcr, TV, PS2, et al, is great, however...makes you wonder)
Well I'll be the one to say something different about Sony. I've purchased 3 Sony Hu's in the past 10 years and have never had any complaints about them. In fact my latest Mp3 player (Sony Explode MP40) is the cats meow, this thing is fantastic. I don't know much about this high power stuff or other brands. No amp 2 Sony 100 amp 6x6's in the door and 2 home made boxes with 10 inch 200 amp Mobile Authority Audio Thumps in behind the seat. Best of all is absolutely no skip no mater how rough the trails are. And it's clear as a bell and more than loud enough for me and anyone within a 100 ft.
So just for the record I'm a happy customer of Sony products.
I have a set of the 6 1/2's far as it goes they are just as good as similar priced speakers. The subs suck the surrounds are way to thin and they tend to seperate when operating over RMS. I dont know about the amps looked at them thats about it. HU's should be alright though.
bought one of the explode amps works good for me sounds better than the last one i had.got it from ebay 1000watts for 100 bucks.
didn't see any Alpine or Pioneer for even close to that price.
I dont know about their subs or amps but I like there 2-way full range speakers. I got an old pionieer head unit in my bronk thats 35W/channel with a set of old sony 6x9's and new Xplod 6.5" round in the door. Then I got an old 140Wrms amp driving 2 boxes that each have a pair of Xplod 6x9's. The 4 6x9's on the 140W amp will match my head units maximum volume with the amp at about 25%. With the amp all the way up, the closest dozen cars all around me are listening to whatever I want em too LOL. Plus if you put a light inside the box then at night you can turn it on and the entire speaker cone will glow red. Pretty trick! I dont see why anyone would want louder... I am only running 140W amp and some songs really hurt my ears when its cranked... liked mettallica with some strong guitar parts. Just my $0.02
