Grease Nipples
I'm also curious about a missing grease nipple on the trans-axle. Instead of a grease nipple there was a screw-like fitting which we had to remove before we could put grease into the U-joint. Is it meant to be like that or was a grease nipple supposed to be there? Another friend pointed out it would be easily knocked off.
Also, there is a hole in the U-joint-like fixture just inside the right wheel. (My Haynes Manual doesn't say what this is called, so please bear with me.) Is a grease nipple supposed to go there or what? Why is the hole there, if it isn't? There isn't one in the same joint on the left.
I'm just new to working on my truck, so please no flames.
Thanks,
Charlotte

...by "nipples" are you referring to zerk fittings? The things you attach your grease gun hose to?I can't say for certain on an 87/88, but I'm reasonably certain Ford has been using sealed front end and driveline parts for some time now. The only things I can grease on my Ranger are the ball joints.
Some time ago, I think they used to put plugs in the holes, and you could simply unscrew them and install a grease fitting of the proper size. I believe they are either 1/4" SAE thread or 1/8" NPT (which is actually the larger of the 2 - go figure). I have also seen fittings made to friction fit into an opening - you simply pound them in with a hammer and grease away.
Excuse me, but all this talk is making me.....er.....I gotta go! Hope this helped.
