Little Help Please

Gents,

I own a 2005 250 with 95K on it. No towing, no abuse...a street truck only.

A month ago truck lost all power, would not respond to the pedal, and blew white smoke out the tailpipe. I put it in "park" for a moment or so, then back to "drive" and the truck responded normally with power and no smoke. Have had no problems since. Checked the degas bottle and it was empty. Normally has about 1/2 inch of coolant in it.

Had 90K service done two weeks back and they replaced the EGR valve. I had pulled it myself and cleaned it but tech said it was bad. No evidence of wetness from coolant when I pulled the valve. Valve was black with caked soot but was dry. Tech said the truck was running great and no codes except the EGR valve.

I've read more than I now care to know about the problems with the oil cooler and EGR cooler on the 6.0 and now I'm afraid to pull out of the driveway! Have checked with a Bullet proof diesel installer and he wants $7500 for EGR cooler, BPD oil bypass system and head studs/gaskets.

Have just ordered an EDGE CTS to monitor coolant and oil temps. If I'm less than 15 degrees delta can I assume EGR and oil coolers are still o.k.??

Thanks for any suggestions.

First yes less then 15deg difference means Oil cooler is good and probably EGR cooler good too. That measurement is only after Coolant temp is above 188 and normal driving conditions. That is ideally during a long straight drive at 65mph, spread will grow when engine is being worked -going up hill, towing, high speeds....

Secondly dont let the "horror stories" get to ya. Its good you are getting a monitoing device, it will help to prevent problems and save you lots of loot. Think of it this way 99.9% of people don't come out to the interwebs to find a forum just to rave about how well their truck is running.

Take the info found here and use it as a "free" education on the 6.0l engine and enjoy your truck! IF there happens to be a concern here at FTE is the place to go nice folks, real helpful.

In short educate yourself about your truck and enjoy driving it!

I also love my truck!
With 95k miles on your truck and the episode that occurred a month ago, I would say that you EGR cooler is getting ready to let loose. Mine went out at 110k (right after the extended warranty expired) and again at 190k. Both times I was away from home and had to let Ford dealerships make the repairs. The first repair was apprx $2k and only replaced the egr cooler, the second repair was $5k and included the egr cooler, oil cooler and the turbo. If your truck were mine, I would replace the egr cooler with the BPD egr cooler, replace the oil cooler with the OEM (Ford) oil cooler and not worry about the heads and studs. Maybe at 300k miles pull the heads but not now. Save your money.

Your doing right in monitoring your vitals. Sounds like a case of bad egr valve only. Dont sweat it. Enjoy your truck.
