Where have you been hiding Marlon, keeping busy at work?
I`m a tree hugger Sherm, it is really amazing when I look at the before and after pictures of my yard.
I totally understand. Before we bought this acreage I considered the option of buying land and building new again. Two problems with that are (1) its incredibly expensive to start an acreage from scratch, (2) waiting for 20+ years for the trees to grow. I don't have that kind of patience. I feel we got a fair deal on our 11.5 acres with a beautiful growth of mature trees. I want to plant more so that as the current ones age and pass, they'll have something taking their place. Its amazing the shelter they provide. On days that are decent temps but extreme windchills, we can still be out in our yard in comfort. Step outside the tree line and you freeze in seconds.
We have a bunch of 8' or so evergreen trees that I need to spread around. The previous owner has them planted a bit too close together, about 5-6' apart. I would like to get them a bit further apart so they can bush out more. I think guys are pretty pricey with tree spade work...
Dad planted his tree lines so the only wind that you feel in the yard is from the east. We planted the trees when I was about 12 now the Spruce and Poplar trees are about 30' tall and the Ash are about 15 - 18' tall.
I`ve never had luck with folks that have bigger tree spades Sherm, guess they want big volume and big bucks lined before heading out.
I like that idea Colin, I wish my yard wasn`t quite so open to the south but the rest of my yard is good tho.
Hmmm...I've got rear hydraulics on my acreage tractor, wonder if I could hang a spade off the 3pt hitch? Back east we used to drive the logging roads and watch for nice 3-4' evergreens. A little tug on them would uproot and poof, you've got a nice tree. I might go north towards Hudson Bay and do the same thing in summer. I'm not sure where else to get a quantity of trees without costing a fortune. Our yard is open to the south also, but I plan to put two rows of trees across there.
Hi, guys! I was very busy working this year untill I switched jobs in the begining of October. Instead of being a mechanic, I'm teaching it at SIAST in Saskatoon. My contract goes till June 30th, but its looking very good that I will be coming back next year. If not I can aways go back to pulling wrenches. Now I get a lot of time with the family, my two week Christmas break is just coming to end, and we are taking the boys to Disneyland on my week off in March. I'm sure hoping that this job will carry on because 2 months off in summer sure looks good to me!
