Along with the oil changes, id suggest watching the charge state of the vehicles batteries, and add a fuel stabilizer..........deteriorating gasoline could be just as big a problem as oil, and couple mile drive may not keep your battery properly charged, especially if a sitting vehicle doesnt start right away after sitting

I worked for a Texaco oil distributor for ten years, that's been nearly twenty years ago, but here's my opinion:

I put only about 3000 miles a year on my pick ups. I change the oil at around 3000 miles in them. My driving consists of a lot of very slow driving on the ranch, a few trips into town a month, and a bit of towing heavy loads on the highway. It gets a lot hotter in central Texas than it does in Tennessee, so I run 20W50 in my dentsides. Anything else gets as thin as water in the summer time. In Tennessee, you would probably be fine with 10W30 or 10W40. I personally use Havoline, but Shell, Exxon, or Chevron Delo would all be good choices. I will not use Quaker State or Pennzoil. I have seen engines with tons of sludge in engines that did use those.

For an oil filter I run NAPA Gold 1515 oil filters. They are the same as the Wix filters, but cost less.

My '79 had around 86,000 miles on it when I bought it, and the previous owner had run Havoline oil in it. I put a long-block in at 187,000 miles. I'm at nearly 250k now, so what I'm doing must work, at least for me.

Good detailed info Voca! you detail your driving habits, what you use and why........Sounds logical and you mention geography and climate, both important factors!
