problems with 4x4

Hey guys im new here and apologize if this is in the wrong spot. My issue is my 4x4 will not ingage. the light comes on but that is about it. I took of my center rim caps and tried putting them in manual instead of auto to see if that would help but nothing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanx a bunch.

Hey guy, would love to help but things like year, model, engine, tranny, etc etc would most likely be some useful information.

Tell me about your 99. Does it have the lever on the floor, or the **** on the dash (to shift to 4x4)?

Does 4WD LOW work? You can feel the difference in speed vs rpms. Even if only the rear wheels are turning, it would say the transfer case shift motor is doing its thing.

Your hubs - are the two positions "free" and "locked" or "auto" and "locked"? - What I'm asking is do you have auto hubs for shift-on-the-fly or a pure manual system?

When you tried rotating the **** on the hubs - it should be close to a full quarter turn. One truck I looked at was so stiff it took tools to engage it. When the hubs work right, it is no sweat for my wife to do it by hand. How were yours?

All these should help zero in on the problem.

Thanks!

No low does not seem to work ether. the 2 positions are auto and and lock. They turn very easy and seem to even kinda click into place. It is a small switch by the steering wheel that ingages the 4x4. it is switch on the fly. one day it worked and one day i went out and it just didnt. No sign what so ever of going out or anything.

Might be the relays. IIRC there are two, so you can swap them and see if it will go into 4x4 and then fail to come out. Swap back to cure it if that happens.

It sounds like the transfer case motor is not shifting if it won't creep in low.

With the auto-hubs, some times pneumatic leaks develop, but manually locking them would still work.

Hope it is the relays, as they are cheaper than the motor!

to further narrow down the issue you could manually turn the hubs to lock. Then if you crawl under the truck the front drive shaft should not move.

Same if you turn the switch on the dash.

The transfer case has its own shifting motor.

So if the hubs lock and the drive shaft is locked in but no 4x4 then either the shift motor or the relays.

See this thread (it has a picture) and see if your relays are in a similar location.
