I have a 1985 F150 with a 300 six and manual OD transmission. Ever since I have owned it, it runs warm (3/4 of the way over on the gauge) once the outside temperature is above 50 degrees F.
I have tried several different brands of thermostats (195 degree), I recently had the radiator cleaned, I replaced the fan clutch. All this made no difference. It has never gotten to the H area on the gauge. Usually my vehicles run the same temperature winter and summer (according to the TEMP gauge). The fellow at the radiator shop that worked on my radiator said he had a 85 F-150 with the 300 six and his temp ran in the center of the gauge. Has anyone had similar experiences with this engine?
You could try a new sending unit. It screws into the block on the passenger side toward the rear of the head. My temperature guage is fairly accurate and never goes any farther than right at the middle.
you could try running a cooler thermostat. I think mine has a 180 and it only goes up when i am ideling for extended time. When i start movieng it goes back down to between the o and the n in normal. Might wanna try that.
Ben
my 85 runs cold all the time unless you sit and idile and then it goes to 1/4 of the way till you start moving and goes back down. But mine has a radiator from 400.
How about the CAT?, there were two on mine, one had completely collapsed inside and the emissions were having a great time in the pipe just getting hotter and hotter!. Had an aftermarket fitted, now have only one instead of two and it sailed through the emissions test.
