electrical problem

Yesterday started my 2004 f250 super duty no problem. Let it warm up and then left. Stopped at end of drive way, took it out of 4 wheel. Got back in and noticed abs light on. Shut off truck to maybe reset. When tried to restart, everything was dead. Volt meter showed .5 dc volts. Disconnected both positive wires and took awhile but both batteries rose to almost 12 dc volts. When tried to hook one back up the starter tried to turn over and dc voltage dropped on battery. Unhooked again, did continuity test on positive wires and shows continuity between it and frame. Tried tracking wires down and do not see a rubbed bare spot and pinched wire. Could a component have suddenly gone bad, such as a starter and be causing a dead short?

Does this truck have a remote starter? If so that would explain the engine trying to start when the batteries were reconnected.

Check for a bad starter relay. Sounds like it may be stuck on. ABS light may have been cause by low voltage.

truck does not have a remote starter. will look into the starter relay. What about the positive wire showing continuity with frame when tested?

If the starter relay is welded closed it will show a circuit through the starter.
