Hey guys I just put a new fuel tank on the truck, a 19 gal rear tank from napa, and it fit just fine. The new sending unit I got from lmc isn't fine though. They said it was for a 19 gal but it fit in hard. I had to push down on the new "cone of failure" and we finally got the lock ring on. Now there is no fuel in the tank but the gauge reads at a quarter tank. Do I need to bend the float arm so the float isn't on the bottom of the tank? We have the bed off so it won't be hard to take the sending unit in or out.
Look at the build date on your door. It used to be anything August and later was actually the next model year. You may have to get a aftermarket gauge. Got my sender from LMC and it required some force to get seated. But it works great in my 87.
I'll check and make sure the ohms are the right range. My truck is a January build 89 so it could be. But I think the float is hitting the bottom pushing it up some. With the sender out I tested it and all the way down showed empty in my gauge. But it wouldn't hurt to ohm the sender too.
If you tested it outside of the tank and it worked fine, I would try bending the float arm.
You may be able to see in through the vent hole or filler hole to see if its hitting anything or sitting on the bottom of the tank.
