For Christmas i sold my gas guzzling 95 GMC 2500 4x4 and bought a 1997 F250 7.3 diesel 2wd. Not happy about the 2wd but i'll live. lol
I bought the truck from my stepfather who has always plugged it in even durning the day in the winter. Its hard starting and sometimes wont start if you dont. His theory is that the older ford diesels are just like that.
What can i do to fix that? I cant always plug it in where it gets parked for hours...
I have a 96 250 with 275k on the clock and it is hard to start at times. I know I need to get the GPR replaced along with the glow plugs. I see white smoke when it starts up. Look for the white smoke with yours.
Thats what i thought. I have absolutely no clue.... I honestly know nothing about diesels. Ok i know enough to drive it I guess. lol. I bought it because I rodeo and will eventually be moving from Colorado to Washington with 3 horses.
Where can i have the relay and glow plugs checked out without spending an arm and a leg?

I'll look. right now its hard to differentiate between white smoke with it being so cold. its 20* or below when starting it in the morning and almost the same when i leave work at night.
Oh you would know if you had white smoke. It would be thick and somewhat clear up after start up. You should be able to take it to a diesel shop and they can check it unless you are handy with an ohm meter. Some of the others can tell you how to check/read it. Crome to think of it I found a video on YouTube jut the other day on how to check it.
I'm far from being a mechanic. lol. I dont have the meter and cant ask my stepfather so i'll have to take it somewhere.... I'll make some calls tomorrow Maybe i can find a friend with one.... I've never seen anyone have to plug one in during the day so i definitely knew his therory had to be stretched....
Even on the coldest mornings you shouldn't have to have your truck plugged in more than 20 minutes. Block heaters work extremely well and waste a huge amount of electricity.
