Getting ready to purchase an 88 or 89 F250: 5.8, 4x4, automatic. The body and interior are in pretty good shape, but the engine has a loud knocking sound upon startup-I've been quoted a price of $1000 to buy it. Is this still a pretty good deal? and if so, what do you motorheads think the knocking is coming from? and....do you think repairs (a possible engine rebuild) would cost over $500? Your advice is greatly appreciated

any good engine rebuild is going to be at least $1k-$3k depending on what you have done. If the pistons are shot than you would want to match weights to prevent rebalancing (about $300), reboring ect.
You could get it much lower if you find out what the problem is and correct it with cost in mind. The engine will probably run ok but may not last as long or run as smooth as a "good" rebuild.
