E4OD Hard shifting
I have a 1990 Bronco with 351W and E4OD. For no apparent reason my transmission all of a sudden wouldn't shift below 3200 RPM and would have to be run almost up to 4000 to shift into overdrive. When it finally did shift I thought the rear axle was going to break off. I talked with several people I know at the local Ford dealership and they said it was the valve body and I should clean the valves. Did that, no change.
The only codes I was getting were 23: Throttle Body Sensor Out of Range and 62: Converter Clutch Failure. I took it to AMACO for a "professional" diagonosis and they said I needed to have the converter clutch and boost valve replaced, so might as well overhaul the tranny while it's out. I had the tranny overhauled only 8000 miles ago so I didn't buy it.
A buddy of mine, who has a '91 F250 with E4OD was having simaler problems and his mechanic replaced the Throttle Body Sensor. For $31.95 at Advanced Auto Parts I was willing to try and it looked like the ECU felt it was bad anyway.
Amazingly it fixed all the transmission problems. I have no idea why the throttle body sensor would cause the E4OD to freak out the way it did. Something to look into before replacing the converter clutch...
