locking storage box

i have an 89 and a 94 and l like them both, but i cant help but look longingly at these older trucks with locking storage areas built into the side. i carry tie-town straps which i would love to be able to lock away along with a socket set etc.
having a box-mounted toolbox doesnt work for me ... i need every bit of box space i can get for hauling scrap. stowing them behind the seat would create a filthy wet mess back there ... i dont consider that an option.

my question is ... why did ford discontinue this feature ... my guess would be rust but would like to hear from you owners.

I don't think it's a rust issue. In fact, I think they're galvanized.

It was probably based on relatively low demand and simplification of the production process...less cost vs profit margin for the option.

not as much room as one would think in there. if your hauling scrap to town alot for what you would pay for a truck with a decent box with the side box i think you would be money ahead to buy a small trailer.

Tool boxes are plastic in the dents. The box would be pretty easy to make however the door could prove challenging depending how nice you want it to look.
Why not just get some sort of premade tool box and weld it into the bed?

I like the dentside storage boxes too. Just one more thing that sets them apart from the newer trucks...

I have also seen some pretty decent custom bumpers with storage built in. Just another thought if you have any fab skills.
