Temp Gauge Problems

I didn't see this question posted anywhere so I hope I didn't over look it. I have a 94 Ford Ranger, 2WD, 5-Speed, with 2.3 engine. My temp gauge hardly moves at all... It actually appears as if it doesn't move it you don't pay close attention and were to just glance at it. I'm thinking it is most likely the temp sensor that is on the engine block as I understand there is also one that is in the line that controls the fans for the radiator. Am I approaching this in the right direction or is there something else I might need to do?

Thanks

yup, you are going the right way. However, I believe that is about the time when ford went with the resistor in the dash cluster fix because a moving gage was freaking people out. sensor for your dash is (I believe) in the thermostat area with only 1 wire. {not really conversant on 1990+ Rangers}

Google temp gage for real fixes using different sensors and resistor jumpers.

ground out wire from gage sensor: key on engine not running. should make dash gage peg full hot and set red light on dash. leaving it loose should be bottom of gage showing cold. if it passes these tests, it is working properly.

I believe the temp sender is in the side the block, under the intake. Above, but behind the oil filter location.

As for the resistor thing, I thought that mainly applied to the oil pressure gauge. It either reads ~1/2 way up, or nothing.........

IF you have no heat in addition to temp gauge issue add a thermostat stuck open to list of possibilities. When was cooling system last flushed out with new antifreeze?
