I've got a 1996 Ranger SuperCab XLT 4.0L A/T and 3.08 gearing. I need to know if I can pull a 2000# pop-up with this truck. I plan to add a Trans Cooler. Thanks for the input. Mutley
My wife pulls a 4,500# plus horse trailer with our '93. You will have no problem pulling your pop-up, assuming it is in good operating condition, including lights and brakes.
I would be very surprised if you exceed your rated towing capacity by adding only 2,000# (our minivan can tow more than a ton!). To be sure just check your owner's manual.
Also, I would be careful using overdrive. You could try it and see - if it keeps hunting (down and up shifting), then I'd take it out of OD.
The higher gears would be nice, but certainly not a necessity.
The Ford towing guide shows towing maximums for 4.0 AT 3.08 gears at 2000-2700lbs. These ratings are a little optimistic. That 2000lb popup trailer could easily weigh 2500lbs or more when loaded. Lower rear end gears would be very desirable.
I disagree that the load ratings are optimistic. I have, many, many times, towed waaaaaay above the GVWR without any problems. The key is to know your vehicle and adjust your driving to the load.
There is absolutely no reason your truck couldn't tow a 2,000# trailer...or a 2,700 pounder for that matter.
Yeah, if your truck can't tow 3,000 lbs. for that matter I'd sell it. The ratings in the book are just a safe rule of thumb to go by...that way Ford's butt is covered.
