So I'm picking up a 1977 stepside f150 on Saturday and while showing the pictures to a friend he pointed out the bed is a little taller than normal where there different options or is it just simply the wrong bed?

First of all, the folks here consider it a heresy to use the Chevy term "stepside" when referring to a Ford "flareside", but since I don't really care one way or the other I just called my brother and asked him to go out and measure his 1978 F-150 Custom Shortbed 4x4 Flareside and he reported this to me:
On the outside measurement, from the rear of the fender to the top of the bedrail it is 27 3/4" tall.
On the outside measurement, from the top of the step to the top of the bedrail it is 29 1/2" tall.
On the inside measurement, from the bottom of the bed to the top of the bedrail it is 29 1/2" tall.
Hope this helps when you get there and see it.
P.S. I've never seen a "flare", only a "step"
P.Ps. I don't know anything about options on the bed sizes or heights.
