2000 XP - weak & variable heat

Hello,

2000 Expedition, EB, 5.4l, 4wd - coming up on 200k miles!

Recently the hot air feom teh heater started blowing "less hot". The fan's blowing just fine - just the air coming out isn't as hot as it used to be.

Plus - that changes with engine RPM. When driving, the air's warmer. When idling, it's significantly cooler.

Plus - there's a difference in air temp between the defroster, the floor and the panel vents. Out of the defroster and floor vents is much cooler than out of the panel vents.

The rear vents seem to be about equivalent to the panel vents.

I want to say plugged heater core - but before I rip it out, could it be something else?

Note - this is the vehicle I had a suspected head gasket leak - I put in a can of head gasket leak sealant, and the prveious problems (chocolate coolant, blowing the coolant reservoir cap...) went away! Could I have plugged up the heater core with this stuff? (Still better than a head gasket job.)

Thanks.

just went through the same issue good heat whole driving but as soon as you idle heat dissipates quickly solution was a clogged heater core thx to the forum I determined this was a job larger than I was equipped to handle ... So 10 hrs of labor later issue was fixed my recommendation is once your in there replace the blend door and vacum actuator f you can (one shot one kill)

Well, the mystery deepens - this afternoon, there's full heat back, for no reason. Oh, I suppose I wiggled the heater inlet hose a little trying to see where it went, but that's not likely it. Some crud stuck and dislodged with pressure and time? Only to go lodge itself where.....?

Check my post on the in-line restrictor. It may apply to you as it sounds just like my problem...
