My son and I found some retractable hood lights off of... *cough, cough* 90's era chevy trucks. Last jy we were at, every chevy in there had one. Nice light with a magnet, about 20' of wire. You can use the light for under the hood or changing a tire, whatever. I think we gave $10-$15 each.
I dont have a spare one, but I'll throw my vote for the GM lamp. The cord is long enough that you could use it as a license plate lamp if you needed and it has a switch, so it works when you want it to.
The mercury switch is in the light fixture itself on the original ford hood lights. It fits into a plug in your wire harness on the passenger side of the firewall.
Ford had one in the early '80s that that also had a magnetic base and was self retracting unlike the GM with the crank. The cord is long enough to go pas the rear bumper on my '78 crew
