Bed wood edges

I would like to cut my own bed wood and use a router to do the edges. Is the router the appropriate tool and what bits do I need?

You can use a router and need to order a slot cutting bit with bearing. It's not to hard. I have a shaper set up at my shop with a power feeder that makes it a lot easier and precise.

I'm not very good with wood but I put my router on a router table with a fence. then put a board down on the edge far away from the blade. This gave my boards a slant on the cut. The cut is a little deeper on the edge of the board than toward the center. Hopefully this will keep water from just sitting in the groove. I took my time and it looks OK so far. It wasn't hard just takes time. Now the rest of the sanding and finishing will have to wait for better weather. Good luck, Have fun.

You'll want to use a "straight plunge" router bit.

I used a fence (flat edge) at the right distance to do my main edge then just ran it out to clear the excess. You can kinda see in these pics the routed area on each edge. Sorry that's the only pic I can find.

Finished up nicely...

Good luck. Just ask if ya need anything else. We'll be glad to help.

Bring over you wood pieces over to my shop and it will take 15 min to run through my shaper when you're ready. Much cleaner cut than a little router.

Here is a similar question about my 70 F350. The PO fixed up the dump bed by replacing the original bed floor with 2x6's and 2x8's. They are tight side by side and I think there should be a gap between them for expansion. I want to put 12 foot bed strips between the boards also.

My thought was this. Use a router to cut a gap between the boards and then use another bit to cut a rabbet for the skid strips. I think I would have to screw a board down to serve as a guide for the router.

Is all this feasible and practical and doable?

No table used but I'd take Jason up on that deal as well. Great offer!

Wayne, that looks really nice! What kind of wood is that? Also, how wide are the boards?

Thanks. It's just select grade pine. I ordered it from Lowes. The boards are 10" wide. I wanted a wider board and a lighter color. All I did was multiple coats of spar varnish that's just clear. No real color added.
