gasket sealants

Well everyone, I'm just getting into the reassembly stage on my 360 buildup, and was starting to think about the issue of sealants..... I could just do everything by the book, but I know that real life experiences sometimes show common leakage trouble spots and people have come up with ways to seal them... so what do you guys use to seal which gaskets? Anything special? And are there any threaded fasteners that require special attention, like sealant or loc-tite? Just something that was on my mind. Thanks.

Good quality gaskets. Clean mating surfaces. I use acetone and a razor blade to get things clean. Permatex sealant non harding, permatex silicone and Indian Head sealer on the pan, timing chain cover and thermostat housing. Glue both sides of gaskets you do not plan to remove untill next rebuild. NEVER use used fasteners on the rods, mains or heads. I like ARP bolts for the rods and mains and I always use studs for the heads. I also pop for new fasteners on the intake manifold but I am a bit of a pickey nut case when it comes to putting things together. You and your budget will decide this.

I like to use a special sealant just for coolant on the thermostat housing and gasket. You can not really torque the housing down without cracking them and I hate when they leak on a new set of belts.

Except for the oil pump pickup I just use white grease on both sides of gaskets. I hate to have to scrape off old gaskets.
